Malta
During its long history the small island of Malta (the total area is 316 Km) has often had a huge importance, especially when compared to its small size. Malta was a sort of a pillow area between Europe and Africa and it has been a very strategic spot for Mediterranean routes, it was indeed a guardian point for imperial commercial routes and also it was a gathering area for many colonial invasions. What makes Malta unique is its historical sites, that are all around. The 5000 year old temples as well as the walls built by the Knight of St. John over 1500 years ago. The history of Malta is one of the world's oldest, going from prehistoric archeological samples to medieval towns. Recently Malta has become a tourist attraction: the weather is sunny for most part of the year and the temperature rarely falls beneath 10 degrees Celsius. The sea water is warm and clear. The island has many lodging places and restaurants that are good and affordable. The night life is vivid and fun. Whoever wants to settle for a calmer visit, however you can find peace in the quiet island of Gozo, where there are some magnificent high coasts, creating amazing cliffs right over the water: the coast line is astonishing, and snorkeling or scuba-diving are highly recommended.
As a little jewel, in the middle of all this, is Valetta, Malta's capital, with its glorious natural seaport and its exuberant Mediterranean flavor. The city is located on a rocky hill between two seaports, right on the Mediterranean Sea. The historical seaport was chosen as the base of the British Navy, who left the island in 1979. The city was built by Jean de la Valette, who gave his name to the city and defeated the Turks in 1565. After being for centuries the preferred city of the Knights of St. John, today Valetta is an important cultural, commercial and administrative center, controlling the entire island. The University is very prestigious. UNESCO nominated Valetta, a Patrimony of Humanity, underling its historical relevance. The best time to visit is between February and June, when it's low season, however September October is also a great period.
